How to Stop Investment in its Tracks
June 25, 2009

Early this week, a new coalition called for expanded price regulation on "special access lines" -- high capacity lines provided by telecommunications firms that service both the voice and data needs of businesses of all types and sizes. Price controls never work, and in the case of broadband access and deployment, it could stop badly needed investment in its track.

The "Red Card Solution"

President Obama wants to tackle immigration reform this year -- certainly a hot button topic. Immigration reform is an important issue for small firms that require guest workers from other countries in order to meet specialized and seasonal business needs. Helen Krieble, a small business owner from Colorado, has authored the "Red Card Solution,"  a pragmatic and smart approach that President Obama should strongly consider as he starts reviewing options for reform.

July 4th and Property Rights

July 4 marks Independence Day - our nation's 233 birthday. But what were those colonists all hot and bothered about any way? To answer that question, it pays to actually read the "Declaration of Independence." The document, after all, is our list of gripes against the British crown that led us to declare and fight for our independence.

FASB Small Business Advisory Committee Report

by Leonard Steinberg

On December 12, 2008, SBE Council member Leonard Steinberg attended the semi-annual gathering of the Financial Accounting Standard Board's (FASB's) Small Business Advisory Committee. As Leonard outlines in his post-committee report, several critical issues were discussed, including: the credit crises and financial reporting implications for small firms; disclosures on certain loss contingencies; and, the adoption of International Reporting Standards and its affect on small or private companies. Committee members also received an update from the SEC and PCAOB. SBE Council thanks Leonard for serving in this appointed capacity, representing the interests of small business and our organization.
